Sometimes you need a little help to set the mood for a tarot reading. Music can block out the noisy neighbor, the frustrating day you just had, or simply bring you from the ordinary world into a space of calm introspection. It’s also hugely helpful when reading for others who might be nervous or skeptical. In this series of posts I wanted to highlight the artists and albums that get me all ready for divination.
You might not want something heavy and dark for reading tarot cards. I can’t imagine having chanting playing while I read with a colorful deck like The Tarot of the Trance or tribal-inspired Tarot of the Four Elements. At times like this you want something upbeat, with a beat – but perhaps not in a language you can understand so you won’t get too distracted. Chances are you don’t speak the language of the artists on Arabica: A North African Voyage Into Sound. It’s a tribal/techno album put out by the UK label Bar de Lune and well worth seeking out. I have it and the sequels and simply shuffle all the songs into one long mix. It would be perfect for the background music to a series of readings at a party – particularly if you were looking for that vaguely gypsy flair.
